VAVA Voom or How to Face the Challenge of Designing a Better and Affordable Bluetooth Speaker

December 15 2015, 03:00

VAVA Voom is an affordable Bluetooth 4.0 speaker with innovative features and the sound quality of much larger speaker systems. The first product for the VAVA brand, VAVA Voom was carefully engineered and designed in collaboration with Wai-Loong Lim, founder and CEO of Y Studios, whose list of clients includes Sonos, Activision, TiVo, and Intel.

The VAVA brand was trademarked and established in 2015, and is registered under Sunvalleytek, a privately held company based in San Jose, CA. Sunvalleytek was founded in 2006 by Frank Sun, with the goal of providing leading-edge consumer electronic products to the world. Sunvalleytek saw an opportunity to use its experience in e-commerce and consumer electronics to design audio products that could offer better quality and design, while providing better value by leveraging the company’s global logistics network and international offices. The company intends to build a complete catalog of portable audio devices, sports headphones, and home speaker systems under the VAVA brand.

Since VAVA Voom would be the first product, the company also needed to find a strong differentiator in extremely competitive categories, such as Bluetooth speakers. As the company points out, “In the speaker market, large cabinet style speakers deliver powerful sound but are cumbersome and hard to carry around. On the other end of the spectrum, smaller mini Bluetooth speakers enable mobility but their sound quality is mediocre at best. The VAVA team set out to produce the best of both worlds, incredible sound and a go-everywhere mobility.”

To solve the problem, the speaker design combines two 5 W drivers, reinforced with two passive radiators, and a 10 W subwoofer on a compact and elegant chassis. The woofer uses a special high-intensity polypropylene cone to produce stronger bass. The speaker shape was also carefully engineered to effectively solve radio-frequency interference issues, while smoothing the frequency response.

The sound system combines a Texas Instruments power amplifier chip, used in several current products from well established brands. It also features CSR’s smart solution for Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR technology, including aptX for high-quality wireless transmission. The VAVA Voom is able to wirelessly connect to two devices simultaneously, playing music from one with a second device ready to instantly switch over. It also supports NFC instant connections with compatible devices, apart from supporting standard audio sources, like CD, DVD, and MP3 players, which can be connected via the 3.5 mm audio port.

A built-in DSP audio chipset by Nuvoton and the optimized circuit design tackles the speaker’s response, along with the VAVA Voom’s three different EQ modes (party, surround, and normal), enabling the speaker to deliver a stronger audio experience, while improving hands-free calling. The built-in microphone and (Clear Voice Capture (CVC) 6.0 technology ensures the user’s voice to  sound loud and clear, and easily heard on the other side.

Another major design focus was the rechargeable 6,700 mAh lithium-ion battery, which provides up to 10 hours of music playback and enables users to charge other music playing devices such as smartphones and tablets. A 15 V standard charging input lets users fully charge the VAVA Voom in around four hours. If needed, the battery can also be charged using a 5 V micro-USB cable (eight hours charging time).

Lim's company, which collaborated on VAVA Voom’s design, has won numerous design awards, including the IDEA, Red Dot, Spark, and iF awards. For the VAVA Voom, Wai and his team wanted to capture the idea of experiencing the flow of sound in any situation, be it at home, at play, or at work. They let the design speak for itself, with nothing extraneous or whimsical getting in the way of the emotions, inspiring the slogan: Play For Real.

“VAVA Voom is more than just a speaker. With its multi-purpose capabilities, it delivers on all fronts from a superior music-listening to charging to calling, and is unmatched on the speaker market for what it offers at its price point,” says Allen Fung, co-founder of VAVA. “With VAVA Voom, we are confident that we have taken the Bluetooth speaker experience to the next level.”

The VAVA Voom Bluetooth speaker sells for $129 and is now available on Amazon.
