Pioneer Introduces Eight Speakers and Six Subwoofers on New Z and D High Performance Automotive Loudspeaker Series

September 22 2017, 03:10
Pioneer Electronics (USA) introduced several new high performance automotive loudspeakers, all using advanced designs and materials. The new Z series of speakers and subwoofers and the next generation D series speakers and subwoofers, have been engineered to reproduce music with premium sound quality, respond to hi-res audio increased dynamics, and take full advantage of unique concepts and proprietary advanced technology, benefiting from Pioneer's decades of automotive loudspeaker design theory and testing ability.

“Although what the automobile of the future looks like is undefined, one thing remains clear – the car will always be one of the most enjoyable environments to listen to music. Pioneer never stops thinking about new ways to apply our acoustical and mechanical engineering expertise, advanced materials research, and manufacturing resources to deliver sound to create exceptional automotive speakers. During Pioneer’s remarkable 80-year history, our loudspeaker technology has advanced the limits of quality sound reproduction, transforming the musical recording into reality and offering an experience that only we can provide,” says Ted Cardenas, vice president of marketing for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Z Series Speakers
The Z Series is based on highly advanced technologies developed by Pioneer, employing carefully selected materials and parts, benefiting from decades of automotive loudspeaker design theory and testing ability. Following Pioneer’s sound concept, the Z series of automotive loudspeakers features smooth off-axial frequency response, superior directivity and extended frequency range engineered specifically to produce dynamic, accurate sound quality for the car.

The quality of music recordings available to listeners has evolved. Hi-Res Audio recordings contain significantly more data compared to a standard CD recording and require a loudspeaker that is capable of smoothly reproducing frequencies of 40kHz or higher. The Z speakers are designed to deliver sound that is clearer, sharper and more complex - reproducing music that is closer to the original performance.

The Z tweeter’s 29mm aluminum alloy diaphragm allows the dome tweeter to remain pistonic and linear at ultrasonic frequencies. The unique diaphragm shape, developed using HSDOM (Harmonized Synthetic Diaphragm Optimum Method) computer analysis, accurately controls differential vibration produced by the diaphragm and improves high frequency dispersion. Pioneer’s Vertex Drive System improves the mechanical coupling of the voice coil and the tweeter diaphragm, reducing distortion and coloration caused by low damping and increasing power handling.

Twaron is a synthetic aramid fiber that is very strong, heat resistant and rigid when woven into a cloth material. Strength and rigidity are important to keep cone shape at higher powers and maintain responsiveness. Both the TS-Z65C and TS-Z65F speakers are built with Twaron. The TS-Z65CH features a dual layer cone constructed with both a Twaron and a cellulose layer, combining the strengths of both materials. Cellulose fibers are naturally self-damping and reduce unwanted resonance. The result is fast response and clear bass, with low coloration and distortion.

To ensure installation flexibility, the Z component system tweeters are extremely compact and feature a unique swivel mount that allows precise aiming of high frequencies. Pioneer’s tri-position mounting kit (included) provides the flexibility to mount the tweeter using a variety of methods: flush mount, surface mount or bracket mount, especially important for concealing the tweeter behind an original equipment tweeter grille in the vehicle dash or door.

The Z subwoofers use much of the same highly advanced technology as the Z full range loudspeakers. Combining high fidelity and high output in a compact, shallow design, the Z subwoofers offer near limitless installation flexibility. The placement of the Z subwoofer can be optimized for sound quality and bass reinforcement, unlike conventional subwoofers that must be installed where they physically fit.

The Z subwoofers are also designed to enhance Hi-Res Audio recordings, with wide dynamics, extended frequency response and extraordinarily accurate and detailed bass. The subwoofer cones created with Twaron are rigid and low mass with excellent damping characteristics. The low mass of an aramid fiber cone improves both sensitivity and the speed of the Z subwoofer, increasing output and power handling.

The Z subwoofer features a shallow basket for installation flexibility, a low Q design for high performance in small enclosures, an oversized cone (15% larger when compared to a conventional 10" subwoofer) and a motor structure with a powerful 67.7 oz. magnet that combine to produce fast, detailed and extended bass with tremendous impact and clarity.

D Series Speakers
The D Series is a result of Pioneer’s automotive loudspeaker engineering experience and expertise, providing broad and balanced frequency response with a wide sound stage. Contoured from lightweight, resin-impregnated fibers of coated polyester fabric, the D series dome tweeter delivers extended high frequency performance. The 26mm diaphragm is extremely resistant to the harsh environmental conditions of the automotive interior (temperature, humidity, vibration, etc.), while maintaining its uniform hemispherical shape to reduce dome breakup due to excessive vibration at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is exceptionally low distortion levels and a smooth, natural sound.

Polypropylene (PP) is a tough thermoplastic resin, ideal material for a speaker cone. The low mass and high damping of a PP cone generate good sensitivity and low distortion. However, polypropylene cones lack the rigidity and strength required for high output and extreme low bass. To resolve this, Pioneer engineers used advanced Computer-Aided Manufacturing to develop a process to blend aramid fibers into the polypropylene resin during the injection molding process. The resulting Aramid Fiber Interlaced Injection Molded Polypropylene (IMPP) cone is ultra-thin and low mass with high rigidity and superior strength, built to produce natural, detailed sound with deep and powerful bass.

The D component speakers utilize the same unique swivel mount as the Z component speakers to ensure optimal tweeter placement, and the D full range speakers are designed with a universal woofer basket to expand installation flexibility for maximum bass and sound quality. The D subwoofers combine bass quality and bass quantity with high power handling and installation flexibility, delivering excellent performance in both acoustic suspension (sealed), and bass reflex (ported) enclosures.

The same aramid fiber interlaced IMPP developed by Pioneer for the D speaker cones is also an ideal material for subwoofer cones. Its use in the D subwoofers results in cones that are incredibly strong with low mass, high rigidity and superior strength to produce deep, powerful and undistorted bass. The surrounds are made of a specially blended, highly durable and moisture resistant butyl rubber compound, that keeps the cone moving in a linear direction, seals the cone to the basket and quickly dampens cone vibration once the signal has changed or stopped. This results in less distortion and superior frequency response.

A subwoofer motor structure consists of the voice coil and magnet assembly. Increasing the diameter and length of the voice coil provides greater control of the woofer cone and higher power handling; however, to take full advantage, the magnet must also be increased both in magnetic power and physical size. The D subwoofer uses an oversized 4-layer voice coil and high energy double stacked magnets (TS-D12D4/TS-D12D2 use oversized 74.1 oz. double stacked magnets, TS-D10D4/TS-D10D2 use 56.4 oversized double stacked magnets) to increase the overall power handling and SPL output with no sacrifice in sound quality.
