Dolby Laboratories Continues to Expand Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos Entertainment Experiences

July 4 2016, 04:00
While there are several competing immersive audio proposals and published High Dynamic Range (HDR) standards for vision, Dolby Laboratories continues to provide its totally integrated approach with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos experiences in a successful way, gradually and consistently becoming the dominant player. This is well illustrated by Dolby’s recent announcements of content collaborations with Lionsgate and Amazon, as well as the worldwide expansion of Dolby Atmos screens installed or committed.

There is no question that Dolby’s immersive sound and visual technologies, including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, provide a complete next-generation home entertainment experience for consumers. As end-to-end solutions — from content creation to distribution and playback — Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are supported by critical points in the ecosystem, including A-list Hollywood directors, executives at major studios, OTT service providers, TV and audio device manufacturers, and operators worldwide.

Recently, Dolby Laboratories and Lionsgate announced they are partnering to release a slate of Lionsgate new release and catalog titles mastered in Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos. As a result of this collaboration, consumers with Dolby Vision enabled televisions and Dolby Atmos enabled home theater products will be able to enjoy a broad spectrum of entertainment content from Lionsgate.

Lionsgate plans to release a slate of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos titles in the coming months. The Company has nearly 80 television shows on 40 different networks spanning its primetime production, distribution and syndication businesses. These include the critically-acclaimed hit series “Orange is the New Black”, the beloved drama series “Nashville”, the syndication successes “The Wendy Williams Show” and “Celebrity Name Game” (with FremantleMedia), the breakout series “The Royals” and the Golden Globe-nominated dramedy “Casual”. Lionsgate handles a prestigious and prolific library of approximately 16,000 motion picture and television titles

Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range on Amazon Video
Dolby and Amazon also announced that the second season of the hit Amazon original series “Bosch” and a slate of blockbuster films are now available in Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) on Amazon Video. U.S. customers can now watch titles available in Dolby Vision via the Amazon Video app on compatible Dolby Vision enabled smart TVs. Amazon Video joins a growing number of streaming service providers that currently support Dolby Vision, including Netflix and Hulu.

The first Dolby Vision titles that are available today on Amazon Video include the second season of the Amazon Original Series Bosch — the hour long drama based on Michael Connelly’s internationally best-selling Harry Bosch book series. Amazon Prime members can watch Bosch in Dolby Vision at no additional cost to their membership. In addition, Hollywood favorites from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: The Smurfs 2, After Earth, Men in Black 3, Hancock, Salt, Pineapple Express, Fury, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Chappie and Elysium are available to purchase in Dolby Vision for all customers on Amazon Video.

“Today is just the beginning. We will continue to expand our selection, adding more movies and TV series for our customers to watch and enjoy in the premium picture quality of HDR,” stated Jim Freeman, Vice President of Amazon Video.

600 Dolby Atmos Screens Installed or Committed in EMEA
Dolby also announced it has reached a significant landmark with its Dolby Atmos sound technology, confirming there are now over 600 screens installed or committed across the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region.

Dolby received a major boost in the number of Dolby Atmos screens from new and existing partners in the region, such as NOS Cinemas (Portugal), Globusmax (Israel) and Traumpalast (Germany), helping Dolby reach this significant achievement. These partners, among others, are planning for an additional 95 Dolby Atmos screens to open between 2016 and 2017.

“This influx of customer wins is clear evidence of the momentum that we continue to see with Dolby Atmos,” says Andreas Spechtler, President of Dolby International. “With the commitment to open these new screens, we’re delighted to continue to bring immersive and breathtakingly realistic sound to audiences across EMEA.”

A trend has also emerged in the region, whereby new multiplexes open with Dolby Atmos fitted throughout. Earlier in 2016 (March), Israeli-based Globusmax opened a brand new 17-screen Dolby Atmos only multiplex in Haifa. This was followed by another new 15-screen Dolby Atmos only multiplex in Kefar Saba. The Traumpalast partnership also plans to unveil its new Dolby Atmos only multiplex in Germany in July 2016. The new Traumpalast in Leonberg will have 10-screens, all featuring Dolby Atmos immersive sound.

Momentum for Dolby Atmos continues to grow worldwide also, with more than 1,800 Dolby Atmos screens installed or committed to in more than 60 countries, more than 130 mixing facilities worldwide and more than 465 titles announced with support from all major Hollywood studios.
