| 15. | The Olio Minstrel, 2nd Part, 1913 Giant Size Edison Kinetophone cylinder 7 ½ in long, 4 ½ in diameter, weight 1 lb 3 oz. running at 120 rev/min to provide lip-sync sound to Edison sound films, 400ft in length and running at 16 fps. This cylinder provided the sound track for a minstrel film show. A white rectangle on the cylinder and the recording of the 'crack' of coconut shells-to be heard on the cylinder-locked on to a visual indication on film to establish an initial sync. Thereafter, lip-sync was maintained by a manual clutch arangement. It is to the credit of the 'hill and dale' acoustic recording system that the footsteps of what must have been a floor manager can be heard between some of the items. |
