Avid Announces Pro Tools 12 with Collaboration Features, new Free Pro Tools First and Sibelius with Cloud Publishing

January 27 2015, 06:00
Avid introduced at the 2015 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show in Anaheim, CA, a new comprehensive global ecosystem for the audio industry, starting with Pro Tools First, a free version of Pro Tools; together with Pro Tools 12, introducing new flexible licensing, cloud collaboration, new marketplace services, and cloud publishing. The new colaboration platform extends to Sibelius, Avid’s notation software, now with cloud publishing.

Enabled by the Avid MediaCentral Platform, the new audio software tools bring together artists, technology vendors, media organizations, and publishers onto one unified platform so they can create, collaborate, and distribute music and audio content more powerfully, efficiently, and profitably.

“The goal of Avid Everywhere is to provide a common platform where everyone—from aspiring pros to established artists and professionals—can come together and create their best work,” stated Avid Chairman, President and CEO Louis Hernandez, Jr. “Our comprehensive global ecosystem delivers on this promise, making it possible for content creators to tell their stories and connect to the world’s widest network of artists, film studios, broadcasters, and media organizations.”

Pro Tools | First
Opening music production to everyone, Avid introduced Pro Tools | First, offering artists, audio enthusiasts, and aspiring pros access to many of the same music creation tools used by top professionals and facilities — at no cost. Simple enough for beginners to learn, yet sophisticated enough for the experienced musician, Pro Tools | First enables everyone to turn their musical ideas into fully realized, professional productions.

“Pro Tools is the audio workstation that redefined the music and post-production industries, providing everything needed to create high-caliber audio mixes,” said Chris Gahagan, senior vice president of Products and Technology at Avid. “With Pro Tools | First, we’ve taken the most powerful, proven, and trusted DAW and streamlined it into a version that’s available to everyone for free, whether they dream of a career in music and are just starting out, or are more experienced and want to give Pro Tools a try. Now users of all levels can start off their musical journey on the right path.”

The integrated Avid App Store provides a world of affordable AAX plug-ins and “First” bundles on the Avid Marketplace. To accommodate the mobile lifestyle of artists and aspiring pros, Pro Tools | First saves and manages sessions securely in the cloud, enabled by the Avid MediaCentral Platform. This allows users to log into an Avid account and access and work on music from any Mac or PC with Pro Tools | First installed. Anytime changes are made, the project syncs with the cloud as soon as it’s saved. As a special introductory offer, artists can work on and store up to three Pro Tools | First projects in the cloud for free.

Pro Tools 12 - Flexible licensing options
Avid also announced Pro Tools 12 giving professionals more choice over how they purchase and deploy their tools, collaborate with others, and get more exposure for their work.  Pro Tools 12 can now be subscribed for as little as $29.99 per month, or bought outright. All new Pro Tools options enable users to stay current with future software updates and innovations as soon as they are released via the cloud, at no additional charge.

Pro Tools 12 with Avid Cloud Collaboration allows secure and simple setup, posting sessions to private cloud storage spaces and invite others to collaborate. The fully integrated collaboration allows multiple people to work on the same session at the same time or create offline and share updates directly within Pro Tools. The new version also includes simplified project and media management, with automatic and fully customizable metadata tagging, as well as built-in communication tools to engage with collaborators through text or video chat directly from within Pro Tools.

Pro Tools 12 software subscription and licensing options will be available in February 2015 and include a monthly subscription (one-month license subscription with updates and support) starting at $29.99/month; a new Pro Tools software annual upgrade plan (12 months of updates and support) starting at $199; a Pro Tools software annual subscription (12-month license subscription with updates and support) starting at $299; and perpetual licenses (including 12 months of updates and support) starting at $899. All new plug-ins and bundles are available as in-app purchases within Pro Tools via the Avid Marketplace.

Cloud Collaboration and Marketplace
Avid Cloud Collaboration, initially to be accessed by Pro Tools users, with other Avid applications to follow, is a set of collaboration capabilities that enable artists to compose, record, edit, and mix sessions working with other Pro Tools users in the cloud, as if they are all together in the same studio.

The Avid Marketplace allows Pro Tools users to engage in a community of artists, acquire new plug-ins and apps as they need them, easily store their work securely in the cloud, and post their finished assets or Pro Tools session files for others to license in their productions.

The Avid Marketplace also enables to find new talent and start new collaborations with the Artist Community and provides a new channel for artists to monetize their work by sharing it with a wide network of potential purchasers – with all licensing and rights agreements worked out through automatic templates.

Avid also announced that 17 new plug-ins and nine new plug-in bundles are now available in the Avid Marketplace and as in-app purchases in Pro Tools. There are now over 60 Avid plug-ins and bundles available for in-app purchase for Pro Tools | First, Pro Tools, and Pro Tools | HD. The new bundles include:

•    Eleven Effects Bundle — A collection of 17 Avid AAX Native, DSP and AudioSuite 64-bit plug-in effects modeled after circuitry and design of many popular analog “stomp-box” guitar effects.
•    Pro Series Bundle — Includes all five of the popular Avid Pro Series processors in AAX Native, DSP and AudioSuite 64-bit format as a single bundle at over 50% savings.
•    First Distortion Bundle, First Reverb Delay Bundle, First Guitar Bass Bundle, First Modulation Bundle, First EQ Dynamics Bundle, First AIR Effects Bundle, and First Air Instruments Bundle, include selections from the new Eleven Effects and other Avid plug-ins for Pro Tools | First users.

Sibelius | Cloud Publishing
Sibelius | Cloud Publishing is a new publishing technology that allows sheet music scores to be sold online. With a Sibelius | Cloud Publishing-enabled site, publishers can allow customers to view, play, transpose, print, and purchase scores using any current web browser or mobile device, including Android, iOS, and Linux.

Publishers simply embed code to display and deliver scores through online store pages, without requiring visitors to install a browser plug-in. All transactions occur on the publisher’s website. Digital rights management ensures that scores are secure and cannot be downloaded or printed in full without purchasing them first. Future upgrades to the Cloud Publishing server playback engine and samples are instantly available to all publishers and customers.

Once customers purchase music, the Cloud Publishing server sends a high-quality printable version to the webstore page for customers to print. Publishers can shape the experience further by setting how many pages can be shown prior to a purchase, as well as other preview and playback choices. The technology also handles scores prepared in PDF format.
