Tascam DR-10X Turns Any Microphone Into a Recorder

November 18 2014, 07:00
Tascam’s compact DR-10X attaches to a handheld microphone for the ultimate compact news gathering recording system. A captive XLR connector attaches firmly to the microphone, capturing interviews at 48-kHz/24-bit Broadcast WAV resolution. The recordings can later be transferred through the microUSB connection or by removing the MicroSD card. Direct playback is possible using the headphone output.

The DR-10X has both manual and automatic gain settings (Lo/Mid/Hi) control, with a low-cut filter and limiter to prevent overloads. The Dual Recording mode captures a copy of the audio at a lower level, creating a backup safety if there is distortion. Recording can instantly begin  by sliding the record switch while turning the unit on, supporting more than 8 h of recording with a single AAA battery.

The design is extremely compact, enabling simple-to-use ENG recording that stays out of the way. The DR-10X uses MicroSD or MicroSDHC media, up to 32 GB and features an easy-to-read OLED display with a Time Track Increment function that writes a new track marker after 15 min of recording. It also enables settings to be edited on a PC and sent to the DR-10X through the microUSB port and there’s even an infrared transmit/receive facility to copy settings between unit.

The Tascam DR-10X is shipping and costs $179.99.
