Bluetooth headphones are such a competitive segment that even the leading brands are forced to constantly update their designs and product catalogue. An interesting example comes from Plantronics, which has been expanding from business-oriented wireless solutions into the lifestyle consumer space. With its new BackBeat PRO 2 wireless over-the-ear headphones, Plantronics shows that is possible to improve, while making even more affordable products.

Plantronics unveiled the new BackBeat PRO 2, packed with more premium features, only for $199.99 USD. The new design features a rechargeable battery lasting up to 24 hours (up to 21 days of standby power, or six months in DeepSleep), able to reach full capacity in 3 hours. Featuring Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR with Bluetooth Class 1 allows to talk and listen at a range of up to 100 meters (330 feet), with A2DP support and multi-device connectivity to connect up to two devices simultaneously (e.g. a smartphone and tablet). The new design uses 40 mm dynamic drivers, includes dual microphones with DSP for voice calls and features high-quality controllable active noise cancelling (ANC).

“More people than ever are ready to cut the cord and take their audio experience wireless, but are concerned they may have to compromise on the audio quality of their music and their ability to listen for long stretches at a time. BackBeat PRO 2 was designed with these consumers in mind,” says Tanguy Leborgne, Vice President, Consumer Solutions, Plantronics. “Its on-demand active noise-cancellation, 24-hour battery life, and Plantronics signature audio technologies mean you can immerse yourself in the rich bass, crisp highs and natural mid-tones of your favorite track at the touch of a button, whether you’re at the office, commuting, at home or on a long flight.”

Delivering a high-quality listening experience, BackBeat PRO 2 excels due to its on-demand active noise-cancellation (ANC), which means users can minimize background noise when needed while working or traveling, and switch to open-listening mode to hear announcements, conversations or the surrounding environment without removing the headphones. To help conserve power, sensors pause the music automatically when the user removes the headphones and resumes playback and the user puts them back on.

Built on the heritage of the previous BackBeat PRO model, BackBeat PRO 2 features a streamlined design with a 35 percent decrease in size and 15 percent reduction in weight from the previous generation model. Along with new ear cups for better ergonomics and ear coverage, a flexible ear cup mount, and a headband and yoke that distribute weight evenly around the wearer’s head, the design of BackBeat PRO 2 provides a comfortable fit during the longest listening sessions. They also  fold-flat nicely for traveling.

For just $199, Plantronics even provides a 3.5mm cable for in-flight entertainment and continue listening when the battery runs out, and they ship with a micro-USB charge cable and travel sleeve. There is also a special edition BackBeat PRO 2 SE with NFC pairing, providing more premium finishes and a hard travel case for $249.99 USD.
