Patent Review: Vertically and Horizontally Balanced Subwoofer

The patent reviewed here was granted to inventors Robert G. Johnston (Amprior Ontario, CA), and Sanford M.Gross (Owings Mills, MD), respectively the head of engineering of GoldenEar Technology, and one of its co-founders. The patent describes a subwoofer with two drivers on each side plus one passive radiator facing up and one passive radiator facing down. The passive radiator facing down effectively couples acoustic energy at very low frequencies into the floor.

Patent Review: A Different Concept Loudspeaker

In this article, James Croft reviews a generic “Loudspeaker” concept patent, granted to Teppei Yamada, of Tokyo, Japan, on behalf of Zorzo Co., Ltd. and which describes a somewhat surprising concept of a loudspeaker that includes a hermetically sealed enclosure, with a driver outside of an enclosure and a second driver inside, with a pipe communicating between the two drivers. This article reviews a patent granted to Apple, describing an electronic audio device including an enclosure having an acoustic output opening and a speaker positioned within the enclosure, as implemented in the company’s range of iMac desktop computers. The speaker and the acoustic output opening are acoustically coupled by an acoustic output pathway and damping chamber. In this article, James Croft dives in an interesting loudspeaker patent (US20150146910A1), awarded May 28, 2015 to multiple inventors from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Institute in Munich, Germany. The patent describes a diaphragm drive system with a conventional electromagnetic motor and corrective piezoelectric elements that drive the suspension from a sensor that detects the nonlinearity and provides the corrective signal.
