The Audio Engineering Society begins its 75th Anniversary year. The Society’s vast contributions to the art and science of audio engineering are recognized globally, including with the announcement that the Society is being honored by the Recording Academy with a 2023 Technical GRAMMY Award acknowledging its “contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field.” The next key event for the Society will be the AES Europe 2023 Convention, being held at Aalto University, Espoo, near Helsinki, Finland, May 13 – 15.

The Audio Engineering Society has announced the incoming Officers and Governors following the 2022 Board of Directors and Board of Governors elections. The Society’s membership has elected Leslie Gaston-Bird, as President-Elect. Gaston-Bird will serve a year on the AES Board of Directors as President-Elect, in 2024 as President, in 2025 as Past-President, followed by two years as a Governor. All those newly elected will begin their terms on January 1, 2023.

The Audio Engineering Society has announced the incoming Officers and Governors following the 2021 Board of Directors and Board of Governors elections. Bruce Olson, AES’s Standards Committee Chair for the past decade, and president in North America for AFMG (Ahnert Feistel Media Group), the established audio software development house (EASE, SysTune, FIRmaker, etc), will join the Board of Directors as President-Elect.

This year’s expanded format AES Show Fall 2020 features a variety of themed programming each week. Audio Engineering Month already included a series of special panels and interviews, TechTours, webinars, Special Events, the APEI Product Development Symposium, the AoIP Summit, and AES Student Week - all online. The final week of Audio Engineering Month will feature the AES Show Technical Program and Marquee Event with Imogen Heap, Heyser Lecture, Special Panels and more TechTours.

The Audio Engineering Society’s Board of Governors (BoG) has elected Brecht De Man to assume the role of AES Director beginning January 1, 2021. Currently serving as a Governor of the AES, De Man has held various roles within the Society and continues to work as a sound engineer, educator, and member of the AES Education Committee. De Man will replace Alex Case (Past President and Membership Committee Chair) as one of two BoG-elected Directors and will serve on the Board of Directors through December 31, 2022.

Bob Stuart, creator of MQA and co-founder of Meridian Audio, was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Prince Philip Medal for 'his exceptional contribution to audio engineering which has changed the way we listen to music and experience films’. Stuart is the first audio engineer to receive the award in the institution's 20-year history. The Royal Academy of Engineering is UK’s national academy for engineering and technology promoting the advancement and "excellence in engineering."

To mark the 35th anniversary of its founding, L-Acoustics announced the creation of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Dr. Christian Heil Future of Sound scholarship. A stipend of $5,000 offered annually to graduate students in the field of audio engineering who are members of the AES, the Dr. Christian Heil Future of Sound scholarship, the first of which has been granted to McGill University student Ben Creelman, who is pursuing a Master of Music degree in the field of sound recording, will be granted yearly to students who demonstrate curiosity and dedication to shaping the future of sound.

The Audio Engineering Society announced the appointment of Colleen Harper as the Society’s Executive Director, effective January 21, 2019. Harper takes the position from Bob Moses, who decided to step down as the AES executive director after six and a half years in the role. “With the addition of Colleen’s proven record of leadership, we expect 2019 to be a banner year for the Society,” stated AES President Nadja Wallaszkovits.

Following a first presentation at the 139th AES convention in New York, Jensen Transformers announced the Jensen JIK-DB1 Iso-Kit, a Jensen transformer equipped direct box that comes in an easy-to-assemble kit form, developed specifically for recording schools and other higher education facilities that teach professional audio as part of their curriculum.

The Audio Engineering Society mourns the loss of Norman C. Pickering, noted inventor of the Pickering phono cartridge, and one of the founding fathers of the AES, dearly remembered by the audio community. In 1948, Pickering discussed the need for a professional organization to foster the growth of audio engineering.
