Avid Pro Tools Carbon Audio Interface Is a Dead End

With competition in the studio recording and particularly in the music production market segments heating up while computer interfaces and network technologies continue to evolve at a fast pace, Avid finds itself increasingly in a hot spot. The industry standard Pro Tools software is facing aggressive competition from all directions, while Avid's hardware days are now long gone. The company needed to do something for the project/small studio market, which they are loosing fast, and so they launched Pro Tools Carbon, a new audio interface.

Anyone who visited the Synthax booth at InfoComm 2018 could find an expanded range of RME Audio interfaces and converters with one thing in common. All the new units expand the options available for multichannel audio interfaces to and from the current audio networking standards. RME expanded Dante and AVB options with the new Digiface Dante and Digiface AVB mobile audio interfaces during NAB 2018. No, at InfoComm, with was time for a new generation of large channel-count M-32 Pro AVB series of converters.

RME announced new Digiface Dante and Digiface AVB mobile audio interfaces during NAB 2018 (Las Vegas, April 9–12). The German manufacturer expanded the broadcast community’s connectivity options with the Digiface Dante audio interface that enables the transmission of up to 64 Dante channels and 64 MADI channels via a single USB 3.0 connection, while the Digiface AVB enables the transmission of up to 256 network audio channels.

In July 2014, Mark of The Unicorn (MOTU) surprised the industry announcing a range of USB/Thunderbolt audio interfaces complemented with Audio Video Bridging (IEEE 802.1 AVB) network technology. Since AVB requires the use of dedicated (AVB-certified) routers and switchers, MOTU also announced its own AVB Switch. Now, MOTU reinforced the range with two new AVB 24-channel interfaces.
