Chinese smart home players are poised to parlay strength in smart home voice control into global influence. According to ABI Research, China will surpass the United States in voice control front end shipments by 15 million units at the end of 2020. Overall, the Asia-Pacific smart home installed base will grow from 66 million in 2020 to 316 million (a 30% CAGR) between 2020 and 2026, states the global tech market advisory firm. In the same period, the smart home installed base in the United States will grow a mere 3.6%.

The global smart speaker market reached a new high in 2019 with sales of 146.9 million units, an increase of 70% on 2018, according to new research from Strategy Analytics. Amazon remained the leading brand with a share of 26.2%, down from 33.7% 2018. Google retained second place with a 20.3% share, also down from 25.9% the previous year. Sales of Chinese language smart speakers in the first quarter of 2019 grew by more than 500% year-on-year, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics. This lifted global Q1 sales to 25.9 million, a 168% increase on the same period in 2018. The global market shares of Chinese brands therefore rose much closer to Amazon and Google, although the US giants remained in first and second place respectively. Strategy Analytics has now increased its forecast for full-year 2019 global shipments by 10% to 147.7 million units.

The final results are in and they confirm that smart speakers were the hottest consumer electronics product in 2018. Strategy Analytics’ latest research shows that Q4 shipments grew 95% to 38.5 million units. This was more than the entire 2017 total and brought the 2018 tally to 86.2 million units. Amazon and Google enjoyed a particularly strong quarter thanks to the popularity of their low-cost Echo Dot and Home Mini speakers and both companies recorded quarter-on-quarter increases in market share.

Global Home Audio Trade Revenues Approached $15 billion in 2018

Futuresource Consulting revealed the latest findings from its World Wide Home Audio Report, confirming the worldwide home audio market signaled an increase of 21% in units in 2018, whilst posting revenues of nearly $15 billion, with major contributions from smart speakers to drive the growth. According to Futuresource, the growing presence of entry level smart speakers from Amazon, Google and Chinese brands impacted the overall average price for a home audio device, down by an estimated 12% the end of 2018.
