The OCA Alliance – the AV trade association formed to promote awareness, implementation and development of the AES70 open network control standard – has announced the release of the latest revision of the AES70-2018 standard with new developer tools and resources, making implementation “easier than ever before”. The result of several years of collaborative work within the OCA Alliance and the AES, AES70-2018 is an evolutionary upgrade to the original AES70-2015 standard.

Bluetooth Special Interest Group Introduces Location Services with Bluetooth 5.1 Specification

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced a new direction finding feature that holds the potential to significantly enhance the performance of Bluetooth location services solutions, down to centimeter-level location accuracy. The new feature, included in version 5.1 of the Bluetooth Core Specification, allows devices to determine the direction of a Bluetooth signal, thereby enabling the development of Bluetooth proximity solutions that can understand device direction as well as Bluetooth positioning systems.

Audio Engineering Society Appoints Colleen Harper as Executive Director

The Audio Engineering Society announced the appointment of Colleen Harper as the Society’s Executive Director, effective January 21, 2019. Harper takes the position from Bob Moses, who decided to step down as the AES executive director after six and a half years in the role. “With the addition of Colleen’s proven record of leadership, we expect 2019 to be a banner year for the Society,” stated AES President Nadja Wallaszkovits.

USB-IF Launches USB Type-C Authentication Program

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the launch of its USB Type-C Authentication Program, marking an important milestone for the optional USB security protocol. The specification defines cryptographic-based authentication for USB Type-C chargers and devices and allows USB Type-C OEMs to protect against malicious payloads and harmful power surges from non-compliant USB devices. DigiCert was selected by USB-IF to manage PKI and certificate authority services for USB Type-C Authentication.

Among other additions, the newly ratified specification introduces four new classes and increases maximum power levels supplied by a factor of three. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) announced the publication of new SMPTE ST 2098 standards for immersive audio, in a effort to simplify distribution of immersive audio, ensure smooth and consistent playout on various immersive sound systems. The Society has published ST 2098-1:2018, Immersive Audio Metadata; ST 2098-2:2018, Immersive Audio Bitstream Specification; and ST 2098-5:2018, D-Cinema Immersive Audio Channels and Soundfield Groups.
