Orchard Audio Launches New Starkrimson 500W GaN Amplifier Modules

May 20 2021, 00:50
Orchard Audio, the innovative audio venture created by Leo Ayzenshtat, expanded its catalog of products for audio enthusiasts and integrators with the launch of Starkrimson Ultra Amp Modules. These high performance audio power amplifier modules utilizing gallium nitride (GaN) MOSFET transistors, expand the highly praised Starkrimson amplification line and are available as completed modules or unpopulated PCBs.

The new Starkrimson Ultra Amp modules from the New Jersey company are capable of 500W into 4 ohms and continue to explore the full potential of the latest GaN transistor technology to achieve extremely low noise and distortion for high quality audio applications. The Starkrimson amplifier family was originally introduced by Orchard Audio as the BOSC hi-fi monoblock audio amplifier, exploring GaN semiconductor technology to achieve ultra-high performance, as reviewed by audioXpress in 2019. The concept, meanwhile renamed Starkrimson, allowed Orchard Audio to introduced the Starkrimson 150W Stereo Integrated Amplifier, combining two-channels of the existing modules and its popular PecanPi DAC into a single slim enclosure, with balanced analog, USB or S/PDIF inputs.

Now, Orchard Audio expanded the power level to 500WRMS from the previously available 150W with the new Starkrimson Ultra Amp Modules, which are also fully balanced from input to output, featuring differential and single-ended audio inputs, and capable to work at the 2 ohm level and with 20A output current. The new modules also offer protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal overheating.

Specifications provided by Leo Ayzenshtat detail 120dB (A-weighted) signal-to-noise ratio, and 250WRMS/500WRMS power output into 8Ω/4Ω, respectively, with a sensitivity of 5Vin for 250W into 8Ω on the balanced input, and 2.5Vin for 250W into 8Ω on the single-ended input.

Orchard Audio is now providing multiple options for those willing to experiment the modules for systems integration, building new designs or even consider volume production, from unpopulated PCBs (with BOM and details disclosed under NDA), or fully assembled and tested modules. There are also multiple options for add-on power supplies, including an Hypex SMPS1200A100 with Softstart solution to power two modules and support for 115 and 230VAC.

For those who wish to experiment with a ready to use package, Starkrimson Ultra Amp Modules are currently available for preorder at discounted pricing of $849.95 per pair, until May 31st (regular price $1049.95 after that). Preorders will start shipping in June/July 2021.
